![]() ![]() KUALA LUMPUR: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Victoria, which now has national heritage status, reverts to its old name of Victoria Institution (VI) from Saturday as it is world renowned. The name of the school commemorates the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. With the support of British Resident at Selangor, Sir William Hood Treacher and donation from Sultan Abdul Samad, The Sultan of Selangor, they built the Victoria Institution in 1893. Some prominent citizens, including the Kapitan Cina (Chinese Captain) of Kuala Lumpur, Yap Kwan Seng, Towkay Loke Yew, and Thamboosamy Pillay, saw the need for a good English school in Kuala Lumpur. ![]() In the 1880s, Raffles Institution in Singapore flourished as an outstanding school. Name of Victoria Institution (VI) from Saturday as Now has national heritage status, reverts to its old Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Victoria, which VI was named as one of the 'cluster school' of excellence by the Malaysian Ministry of Education, and will be given autonomy in administration and adequate funding to excel in specialised fields (academic, sports and extra-curricular activities) of choice. The school is named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, and was opened to commemorate her golden jubilee. It is considered one of the best non-residential schools in Malaysia.
